WEGGIS, ZERMATT AND THE FURKA PASS
September 16 – October 5, 2017
Pre-Journey to your Basel to Amsterdam River Cruise
On the shores of Lake Lucerne and at the foot of the renowned Rigi, Weggis is the most charming place. Even in the past, many people raved about Weggis: above all, the American author and travel writer Mark Twain. In 1897 he wrote that Weggis was the “loveliest place” he had ever visited.
Is a heavenly ‘car-free’ Swiss village that is famous for its breathtaking mountain ranges and enthralling winter sports, especially on the mountain which towers above the village, the Matterhorn.
Furka Cogwheel Steam Railway – the original hisorical route of the Glacier Express
This wonderful line stretching 17.8 km, is one of the most spectacular train routes in Switzerland. Originally built as part of the Glacier Express route over the Furka Pass it was replaced by a tunnel opened in 1982 which now allows the Glacier Express to operate all year. With this section of the line no longer needed, as all Glacier Express trains use the tunnel, the plan was to close this section of the line, but with fantastic local support the “Furka Cogwheel Steam Railway” has purchased the service.
