Japanese Archipelago Voyage

Japan has one of the most fascinating cultures for any traveller to discover. It remains a country of extremes: from leading edge technology to age-old tradition, with a real dedication to customs of the past. We are delighted to take you on a 19-day voyage that begins in dazzling Tokyo and circumnavigates the Japanese archipelago aboard the luxurious MS Westerdam. We purposefully chose to travel in the spring as it is at this time that the country puts on its most glorious show: the blooming of its fabled cherry blossom trees. On our curated tours and excursions, you will partake in tea-tasting ceremonies, zen meditation and hands-on sushi making lessons. You are sure to come home with a myriad of treasured memories on this voyage of a lifetime.

Journey Highlights

Holland America Line MS Westerdam

Recently updated with new bar, entertainment and dining venues, plus completely reimagined suites, the MS Westerdam is a fascinating destination in her own right. On board, enjoy live entertainment, learn culinary skills at a cooking show or hands-on workshop or enrich your travel experience at the new Exploration Central atop the ship.

Shirakawa-gō Village

Shirakawa-gō's farmhouses have made the village a UNESCO world heritage site, for the way their steeped thatched roofs resemble the hands of Buddhist monks pressed together in prayer. These roofs are designed without nails and can support the accumulation of snow that can occur during the winter months, as well provide a large attic space to cultivate silkworms.

Mount Fuji

Mount Fuji, or Fujisan, has inspired artists and poets throughout centuries, and is an essential element of Japanese culture. This active volcano, which last erupted in 1707, can be seen all the way from Tokyo and Yokohama on a clear day. At 3776 meters, it stands as Japan’s highest mountain, and is snowcapped for almost half the year.

Nara Park

As we visit Todaiji and stroll through Nara Park, we are sure to encounter one of the freely roaming deer. Considered to be messengers of the gods, Nara’s famous deers have become a symbol of the city. Our spiritual experience continues as we take a moment to learn about Zen meditation, before a very traditional lunch in a Japanese Buddhist temple. This simple mela in ingredients will give us a peak into the lives of monks in the temple.
