DEPART FOR LISBON, PORTUGAL

Enjoy a private car ride to the airport. Guests departing from the Toronto airport are assisted with their check-in. Meet your Journey Manager and fellow travellers and board your flights to Lisbon, Portugal.

LISBON

The oldest city in western Europe, Lisbon, offers a vibrant mix of ancient and modern. Upon arrival in Lisbon, settle into our hotel and explore the city at your leisure. In the evening, join us for a relaxing dinner. Let the warmth of the city and new friendships welcome you on your journey ! (D)

LISBON & SINTRA, HOME OF ROYALTY

This morning, all of Lisbon awaits as we discover Rossio Square, Liberty Avenue, and other fascinating sights of the city. Then, in the picturesque village of Queluz, wander through the beautiful 18th century palace that is often known as the Portuguese Versailles. In Sintra, we dine on local traditional fare for lunch before enjoying a coastal drive back to Lisbon. In the evening, our guide treats us to a traditional dinner and Fado folklore show. (B,L,D)

FUNCHAL & MADEIRA'S FLOWER FESTIVAL

After breakfast, we head to the airport for our flight to Madeira. Our local guide welcomes us to the fragrant city centre, where we are immersed in the pleasures of the Flower Festival, such as the flower carpets in the streets, decorated shop windows, and performances of traditional and classical music. During lunch, we will sample various types of Madeira wines at a local wine lodge. After this magical day, relax and dine at our hotel. (B,L,D)

MONTE & THE FLOWER MARKET

Begin the day with a visit to the local market, where we are welcomed by flower merchants wearing bright traditional costumes. Amble among the quaint fruit and vegetable stands placed around a central patio. Contemplate the ‘Wall of Hope’ in Colégio Square, where children place flowers to symbolize hope for a more peaceful world. After lunch in a local Quinta, board a famous sledge for a dramatic ride down the mountain from Monte, truly one of the most unique experiences in Portugal. Enjoy dinner at our hotel. (B,L,D)

EIRA DO SERRADO & THE FLOWER FESTIVAL PARADE

Today, we are immersed in the incredible landscapes of this awe-inspiring region. We begin with a scenic drive to Pico dos Barcelos before continuing along a winding road, stopping for a short walk to the breathtaking viewpoint overlooking the small town of Curral das Freiras. After lunch, we gather on the Main Avenue to enjoy the highly anticipated Flower Festival Parade. Feast your eyes on the beautiful costumes and vibrant floats as the sweet smell of spring flowers drifts in the air. Return to our hotel for dinner. (B,L,D)

PORTO MONIZ

A drive along the island’s rugged coastline lets us explore quiet seaside towns such as Ponta do Sol and Seixal. We travel to the top of Europe’s highest promontory, Cabo Girão (580m), to enjoy the stunning views overlooking the ocean. Then, we descend towards the northern shores of Porto Moniz to enjoy a delicious lunch at a family-owned restaurant. Relax on the journey back to Funchal before dining at Chef Miguel Laffan’s signature restaurant, ‘Design Centre Nini Andrade Silva’. (B,L,D)

LEVADAS & FLIGHT TO PORTO

This morning, we explore the famous ‘levadas’ of Madeira. These stairways and canals cover Madeira and are an ancient method of irrigating the land. Follow the ‘levadas’ and enjoy the breathtaking vistas while discovering the important role these unique aqueducts play in Madeira. After lunch, we leave this lush island and fly to Porto. Upon arrival, our private coach and local guide give us a panoramic tour of Portugal’s second-largest city before arriving at our hotel for dinner. (B,L,D)

BARCELOS, VIANA DO CASTELO, & SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA, SPAIN

Travelling north, we cross the beautiful province of Minho before arriving in Spain. In Barcelos, Spain, discover the home of the rooster, one of the most common symbols of Portugal. Visit the historic and picturesque coastal city of Viana do Castelo, travelling up the mountain and passing by the belvedere of Santa Luzia. After lunch, our adventure continues to Santiago de Compostela, an important centre of pilgrimage since the Middle Ages. Absorb the fascinating history of this unique area ! SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA

This remarkable place is one of northern Spain’s most beautiful, as music fills the air. At the Cathedral of Santiago, explore one of Christianity’s most important sights before our local guide expertly takes us through the intricate streets of ‘Casco Antigo,’ the old area of town. After lunch, the afternoon is yours to enjoy the beauty and history of this remarkable city at your own pace. In the evening, a delicious dinner will be served at a local Quinta. (B,L,D)

BRAGA, THE SACRED WAY & GUIMARÃES, PORTUGAL

The Sacred Way, a baroque granite double staircase, might look daunting, but pilgrims manage to climb it on their knees! Enjoy lunch at the top while taking in the sweeping view of Braga. We continue to Guimarães, Portugal, whose medieval streets and well-preserved monuments make it one of the most attractive places to visit in Europe. Upon arrival in Porto, board the intimate Spirit of Chartwell, your home for the next seven days. All meals will be served on board unless otherwise indicated. (B,L,D)

WOODEN BALCONIES OF AMARANTE

In the pretty riverside town of Amarante, the streets are lined with rows of 17th century mansions boasting brightly painted wooden balconies. After enjoying a walking tour led by our local guide, explore this lovely village at your leisure, being sure to try some of the famous pastries along the way. Return to the boat for lunch and a scenic cruise along the Douro River. After dinner, indulge in a Vintage Port Wine Celebration. (B,L,D)

LAMEGO, ONE OF PORTUGAL'S PRETTIEST CITIES

After lunch, visit the charming historical town of Lamego and take the time to admire the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Remedies. Towering graciously over the town, the sanctuary offers its visitors a beautiful example of Portuguese baroque architecture. At each of the nine levels of the long 686 step ascension, are grand and ornate panels of blue and white tiles. Continue your exploration with our local guide in the town’s museum. Enjoy some time at leisure to meander the narrow winding lanes and discover the many historical gems Lamego holds. Enjoy a culinary demonstration and indulge in the local culinary delicacies and refreshing sparkling wine called ‘Raposeira’ in a local Quinta. (B,L,D)

FIGUEIRA DE CASTELO RODRIGO

This morning, we cruise a scenic section of the Douro on our way to Barca d’Alva. On board, relax with a lecture on the history of Portugal. After lunch, we venture ashore for a tour of Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, a small fortified village with 13th century walls that is known as the ‘white village’ because of the almond trees that surround it. In the evening, we enjoy the Captain’s Dinner and a traditional Fado show. (B,L,D)

SALAMANCA, SPAIN

Salamanca has been a seat of learning since the early 13th century and has since been enriched by visiting kings, bishops, and artists. As a result, many call this beautiful city a living museum of the Middle Ages. For lunch, experience local fare and a lively Flamenco show. Explore the university and the beautiful ‘Plaza Mayor,’ a popular gathering point for locals and visitors alike. In the evening, enjoy a traditional Portuguese barbecue on board. Whether your tastes are historic, culinary, or both, Salamanca is sure to satisfy. (B,L,D)

THE PALACE & GARDENS OF MATEUS

After a morning of cruising and lunch on board, prepare for an enchanting visit to the stunning Palace and Gardens of Mateus. Still owned by the Counts of Vila Real, they have served as a Cultural Foundation since the 1970s, with the aim to preserve the villa, study its archives, and promote educational activities. We discover the connection between Mateus Rosé Wine and the stunning 18th century house. Wander at your leisure in the gardens, which are believed by many to be Portugal’s most beautiful. Your head filled with these wonderful images, rejoin our boat for dinner. (B,L,D)

PORTO & PORT WINE

At Quinta da Aveleda, we explore the wonderful grounds and enjoy a sumptuous lunch. Currently, the Quinta da Aveleda is the largest Vinho Verde exporting company and is proud to remain a family-owned business in every way. The estate is also recognized for its parks, where rare species of trees flourish, some two hundred years old. In the evening, join your fellow travellers for a farewell cocktail and dinner. (B,L,D)

Enjoy this enchanting floral festival and parade showcasing the many island flower species elaborately displayed on costumes and floats, filling the streets with beautiful aromas. Visit the Cathedral of Santiago, one of Christianity’s most important places, where legend states that St. James is buried. Discover the quaint streets of Casco Antiguo, the old area of town, with the help of your local guide. Spirit of Chartwell
